The 2020 Dodge Journey

A dark gray 2020 Dodge Journey.

If you asked a group of people what they thought makes an SUV good, they’d most likely have different answers. Soccer moms and dads might answer with plenty of space and good fuel economy. While adventurists might say that a good SUV has off-roading capabilities and a solid suspension. Where you drive and what you do with your vehicle will always play an important role in how you chose the right SUV. Today we will take a look at the well rounded versatile 2020 Dodge Journey. Read on for a complete SUV buying guide for the 2020 Dodge Journey.

What to expect

With the 2020 Dodge Journey, you get possibly the most affordable midsize crossover SUV on the market. With three rows of seats and boasting 7 seats in total, this crossover attempts to do a lot with a little. For large families utilizing all 7 seats, the Journey gives an extra 10.7 cubic feet of storage behind the third row. Drop off half the crew and fold down the third row of seats to grow the Journeys cargo space to 37 cubic feet behind the 2nd row. No passengers in the back?—fold both the 2nd and 3rd row of seats to get a total cargo space of 67.6 cubic feet of volume behind the 1rst row.

Utility and Special Features

The Journey SE is the entry-level model and comes with a 4.3in infotainment console that includes AM/FM radio, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB port. Want an upgrade? That'll come with SiriusXM satellite radio, a CD player, and MP3 compatibility. For those looking for a bit more luxury, the Journey Crossroad model provides an 8.4in infotainment touchscreen—that's right, a touchscreen—that includes AM/FM and SiriusXM radio, a CD/DVD player, MP3 compatibility, and an auxiliary audio input jack and USB port. The Crossroad upgrade includes GPS navigation.

The standard sound system comes with a six-speaker surround sound and can be upgraded with premium speakers. Keep boredom low by adding a 9.0in entertainment display screen that folds down from behind the first row—remote control and wireless headphones included.

Engine Performance and Fuel Economy

In the past, Dodge offered Journey lovers an option to upgrade to a V6 engine. However, the 2020 Journey solely offers a 2.4-liter I-4 engine that reps' 173 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. The Journey comes with front-wheel drive and a 4-speed automatic transmission.

According to MotorTrend, the 2017 Journey with a V6 engine sped through a 0-60mph acceleration test drive in 7.9 seconds. The experts expect that the new 2020 with a smaller engine will be at least a second or two slower. Both the Crossroad and the SE models keep the front-wheel-drive as the only option available. The EPA rates both at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway—21 mpg combined.

Dial-in the Style with Trim Options

Any good SUV model comes with different trim options. The basic Journey SE model comes with 17in steel wheels covered with plastic hubs, while the Crossroads has 19in black aluminum rims. Both models come with a roof rack—the Journey SE roof rack is black, and Crossroads is chrome plated.

SE Value Trim

The base model, Journey SE, offers a bright grill in the front, body-color door handles, and tinted sunscreen glass. On the inside, the Journey SE is outfitted with low-back front bucket seats and is available in premium cloth trim of black or light frost beige. It also has a full-length center console, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and some cool illuminated cup holders.

Crossroads Trim Package

The Crossroads one-ups the SE trim package with leather seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped trim, and a sunroof. It also comes with LED reading lamps, and modern looking LED backlights. Some other features offered are premium trim on door panels and light gray accent stitching on the interior. This trim package has in-floor storage units behind the first row and three-zone climate control. Both models are equipped with rear parking sensors, power windows, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The availability of adding options to your ride allows you to customize the 2020 Journey to your liking. Of course, the more options you add, the more your base price goes up.

Safety

The NHTSA gave the Dodge Journey four out of five frontal crash and rollover scores and a five-star crash score. It comes loaded with front-impact airbags, side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, and knee airbags—7 airbags in total. The Dodge Journey is well equipped with all the modern safety features you'd hope for in a new SUV. Its anti-lock brakes sense when a tire has locked during dangerous maneuvering and automatically modulates the brake pressure unlocking the tire. If the Dodge Journey exceeds handling limits, its stability control reduces power to the engine while applying brakes to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

In the unfortunate event that the Dodge Journey is involved in a collision, its seat belt pretensioners place occupants in optimal seating position by automatically tightening seatbelts where needed. On top of that, its anti-whiplash head restraints cradle occupants' heads helping prevent whiplash injuries.

Warranty Coverage

It comes with a limited three-year warranty or up to 36,000 miles. It also comes with a five year or 60,000 miles powertrain warranty.
